DIVISION V : Late Touchdown Gets Corona Past El Monte Arroyo

David Janoski scored on a three-yard run with 4 minutes 3 seconds remaining and Corona turned away two late scoring opportunities as the top-seeded Panthers defeated El Monte Arroyo, 21-16, in the Division V championship game Friday at Corona High.

It was Corona’s second football title in three years.

Corona drove 80 yards for the winning score, highlighted by Janoski’s 42-yard run to the Arroyo 3. Gerald Washington was twice stopped for no gain before Janoski swept left and fought through a tackle at the 1.

After the score, Arroyo twice had the ball in Corona territory, but Jason Saldivar recover D.J. Hoyt’s fumble at the Corona 22 to end one drive. Arroyo got the ball back at the Corona 49 in the final minute, but Corona’s Darrell Bell intercepted a pass on the final play.

Arroyo took the lead on a 15-play drive to start the second half. Keith MacLellan scored on a 3-yard run to make it 16-14 with 4:43 left in the fourth quarter.

Hoyt finished with 174 yards on 22 carries, but was held to 26 yards in the second half. Janoski, who returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, carried 14 times for 107 yards.
