Once again, defense will be Corona del Mar’s forte. In the Sea Kings’ opener, they held San Dieguito to 48 points through three overtimes. The problem: They still lost. “Going in, I was concerned how the juniors would handle the step up to the varsity level,” Orris said. “As it turns out, in the first four games they are doing a respectable job, and the returning senior starters haven’t been producing like I expected them to.” Merriman, a seldom-used sophomore on the varsity last season, has been the most consistent player, Orris said. Clark, who ranked third in the county in three-point field-goal percentage at 54.4% last season and helped the Sea Kings to the Division III-A quarterfinals, is still getting into basketball shape after moving over from the football team. Hesse, who played power forward last season, is adjusting to a new role--that of scorer to replace Jon Upham, a second-team All-Southern Section player who averaged 19.8 points and is now playing at Redlands. Orris said Hesse needs to look for his shot more often. “Hopefully, between now and the time league comes around we will continue to improve and be more of a factor than we are now,” Orris said.
