OUTLOOK

Underwood, a member of the UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton basketball coaching staffs the past two seasons, has replaced veteran Dick Katz as coach. Katz resigned last April to continue as an assistant at Golden West College and is also coaching the Westminster girls’ team. The Westminster boys made the playoffs in just two of eight seasons under Katz--including last season’s automatic entry--and the outlook doesn’t appear any brighter this season for Underwood. Frechette is the only returning starter and along with Madland are the only players with significant height. “I feel the strength of our team will be its tremendous drive,” Underwood said. “Our play during the end of the summer was characterized by defensive intensity and great emotion. We need to add a consistent offensive attack to be successful.” Westminster won the consolation championship of the Savanna tournament but the victories were tainted. The Lions beat Kennedy’s junior varsity, 65-43, and Sunny Hills’ junior varsity, 54-35, to earn the title. Frechette averaged 20 points in the three games and was named to the all-tournament team.
