COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Michigan Freshmen Back in the Groove, 86-70

Michigan’s freshmen rebounded from their overtime loss to top-ranked Duke with an 86-70 victory over Central Michigan Monday night at Ann Arbor, Mich.

The 15th-ranked Wolverines (5-1) shot 62% in the first half and led all the way against the smaller Chippewas.

Central Michigan (4-3) played without 6-foot-8 center Dennis Kann, who had a sprained ankle, and without his backup, 6-5 Mike Miles, who also was injured.

Three of Michigan’s five freshmen finished in double figures, with Jalen Rose scoring 23 points, Chris Webber 16 and Juwan Howard 12.

Darian McKinney scored 24 for Central Michigan.

With 3:52 remaining in the first half, Michigan put all five freshmen into the lineup together. In the 2:10 span they were together, they outscored the Chippewas 11-1 to open a 36-20 lead.

No. 24 North Carolina Charlotte 90, North Carolina A&T; 59--Rodney Odom tied a career high with 20 points and set a career high with 16 rebounds as the 49ers (5-1) beat the Aggies (1-2) at Charlotte.

Also for North Carolina Charlotte, James Terrell tied his career high of 24 points and Jeff Mullins, now in his seventh year as coach, notched his 100th career victory.

Dana Elliott scored 18 points for A&T.;

The 49ers led, 44-28, at halftime, and the closest the Aggies came in the second half was 20 points.

OTHER GAMES

Washington State 119, Alcorn State 81--Neil Derrick scored 28 points as the Cougars overpowered the Braves at Pullman, Wash. Washington State (8-0) is off to its best start in 42 years. The 1949 team started 10-0.

Washington State controlled the game from the outset and took an early 38-18 lead over Alcorn (4-4) of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The Cougars surged with a 22-2 run, including eight points from Eddie Hill, for a 53-20 lead with 4:26 left in the first half. Hill finished with 25 points.

Elsewhere:

Freshman David Vaughn scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Memphis State to a 105-97 victory over Southwestern Louisiana at Memphis, Tenn. Vaughn made 13 of 22 shots from the field and five of seven free throws before fouling out with 2:38 left in the game. It marked the highest total by a Memphis State freshman in school history. Memphis State (2-2) trailed 88-87 with 6:25 left, but the Tigers scored the next nine points for a 96-88 advantage, and the Ragin’ Cajuns (1-5) never got closer than five points after that. . . . Guard Todd Leslie scored 20 points to pace Northwestern to an 84-60 victory over Idaho State at Evanston, Ill. The Wildcats, who won only five games last season, are 5-1.
