PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Patterson, Gossett Want Pro Bowl

Share

Special teams player Elvis Patterson and punter Jeff Gossett know they had Pro Bowl seasons, but they won’t know whether their peers agreed until AFC and NFC squads are announced today.

Patterson is seeking the position designated for the conference’s top special teams player. His chief competition is thought to be Buffalo’s Steve Tasker.

Gossett leads the NFL in net punting average. Miami’s Reggie Roby is the only other possible choice in the AFC.

Raiders expected to be on the AFC Pro Bowl squad: safety Ronnie Lott, defensive end Greg Townsend, guard Steve Wisniewski and kicker Jeff Jaeger.

Receiver Mervyn Fernandez, who didn’t start Monday’s game because of a shoulder strain, ended his team-record streak of consecutive games with at least one reception at 60. . . . The Raiders’ 117 yards in total offense against the Saints was the team’s lowest output of the season.

Coach Art Shell said that defensive end Howie Long and Wisniewski, both sidelined because of knee injuries, might be available this week.

“There’s a good chance for both of them,” Shell said. “We’ll have to wait and see.”
