BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : University Puts Away Santa Ana

Santa Ana’s Jorge Vasques scored 46 points and had nine three-point baskets, but University defeated the Saints, 79-77, in the first round of the Irvine World News tournament Tuesday at University High School.

Bill Swetnam made a five-foot jumper with 42 seconds remaining to give the Trojans (3-5) a 79-77 lead. Santa Ana is 2-3.

In other Irvine World News tournament games:

Edison 88, San Clemente 41--Brandon Jessie scored 20 points for Edison (3-2) and Marcus Guild had 14 for San Clemente.

Esperanza 66, Santa Ana Valley 43--Matt Kordik had 20 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs, as the Aztecs (2-4) advanced.

Irvine 71, Orange Lutheran 45--Jado Lee had 13 points, Brian Boothroyd 12 and Brian Linsenmayer 11 for Irvine.

Kennedy 68, Laguna Beach 52--Jermaine Galloway scored 21 points for Kennedy, and Taylor Butcher led Laguna Beach with 19.

San Pedro 78, Marina 71--Marina (3-3), which trailed by as many as 20 points, cut the deficit to three with two minutes remaining, but could draw no closer. Brenden Lyons scored 20 points for the Vikings.

Woodbridge 67, Westminster 43--Ryan Sunderman’s 14 points led the Warriors (4-1) at home.

In a first-round game of the Sonora Classic:

Century 63, Whittier La Serna 51--Damien Hamler scored 12 points, Jason Welty 12, Thomas Harmon 11 and Ronnie Arristondo 10 as the Centurions improved to (5-1).

In a first-round game of the Riverside La Sierra tournament:

Calvary Chapel 91, Glendale Academy 52--Chase Lubbock had a school-record 16 assists, John O’Brien had 36 points and 22 rebounds and Sabe Younger had 24 points and 20 rebounds as the Eagles improved to 4-1.

In the first round of the Sonora Classic:

Costa Mesa 44, Sonora 38--Jeff Pickens scored 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs (3-2) overcame a one-point deficit after the third quarter.

In the first round of the La Verne Damien tournament:

Monrovia 86, El Dorado 80--Mike Johnson had 22 points for El Dorado, but the Hawks could not keep up with the Wildcats’ Alfred Kennedy (30 points and 11 rebounds) and Jerod Mix (27 points).

In nonleague play:

Capistrano Valley 64, Corona del Mar 52--David Sedgwick led the Cougars (6-2) with 14 points

Trabuco Hills 56, El Toro 38--Gavin Vanderputten hit 13 of 17 shots from the field en route to a game-high 27 points.
