SPORTSCOPE : Toros to Play NAIA Foes in 2 Home Games

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team, winner of four of five games, will play National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District III opponents tonight and Saturday at Toro Gym.

Dominguez Hills (5-3) will play Christian Heritage at 7:30 tonight and The Master’s College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Christian Heritage is 2-5 and The Master’s is 6-3.

Dominguez Hills defeated North Central of Illinois, 84-60, and Biola, 48-45, last week. Michael Moore’s three-point basket at the buzzer gave Dominguez Hills the victory over Biola.

Moore, a 6-foot-7 senior, leads the Toros with an average of 9.9 points and 4.8 rebounds and also has a team-high nine three-point baskets. Another standout has been 6-1 freshman guard Chris Thompson, who is averaging 9.4 points.

Christian Heritage finished third in the Christ College Irvine tournament last week. The Hawks are led by 6-2 sophomore guard Shane McKim and 6-4 senior forward Jim Hill.

The Master’s, regarded as one of the top teams in NAIA District III, is led by 6-6 senior forward Tom Bruner, 6-4 Jason Webster and 6-0 senior guard Damon Greer. Webster is averaging 16 points, Bruner 14.3 and Greer 10.3 points and 4.8 assists.

On Dec. 27, Dominguez Hills will travel to Phoenix to compete in the Grand Canyon tournament.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team will travel to Albuquerque to play New Mexico at 2 p.m. Saturday.

New Mexico, competing in women’s basketball for the first time since the 1986-87 season, is 0-7. Loyola is 5-2.

Both of Loyola’s losses came on the road. The Lions lost to Michigan State, 82-51, on Nov. 30 and UC Irvine, 73-53, on Saturday.

The Lions have been led by 6-0 senior forward Joelle Longobardi, who is averaging 18.6 points and 7.6 rebounds. Longobardi has scored in double figures in 17 of her past 18 games.

Sophomore forward Lisa Humphreys scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds, and forward Miki Graf had 10 points and a school-record 20 rebounds against Cal Poly Pomona last week.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team will travel to Northern California for nonconference games tonight and Saturday.

The Toros (3-5) will play San Francisco State at 7:30 tonight and Cal State Stanislaus at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Dominguez Hills, which lost to Point Loma, 51-50, on Tuesday, has been led by senior center Cheri Bullet and sophomore guard Karee Bonde. Bullet is averaging 14.2 points and nine rebounds, and Bonde averages 12.1 points and has a team-leading 17 three-point baskets.

Dominguez Hills defeated San Francisco State, 66-37, in the first round of the Fresno Pacific tournament on Nov. 22.

Stanislaus, which reached the NCAA Division II playoffs last season, is led by center Alice Cole, who averages 18.9 points.

Registration is under way for the fourth annual Loyola Marymount Bullpen Club golf classic at noon Jan. 20 at the Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas.

The cost is $150, including green fee, cart rental, lunch and dinner. The cost for dinner only is $40.

Proceeds go toward the Loyola baseball program. The deadline is Jan. 3.
