SOCCER ROUNDUP : Edison Needs Overtime to Shut Out Brea Again

Mike DiGiovanni, the Edison High School boys’ soccer coach, expected a tough match Saturday when Edison and Brea-Olinda met in the semifinals of the Brea-Olinda tournament.

After all, the teams had met two weeks ago in a nonleague game, which Edison won, 1-0.

Saturday, Edison (4-0-2) prevailed again, winning, 2-0, in overtime.

With the score tied, 0-0, at the end of regulation, the teams played two 10-minute overtime periods.

Edison fullback Brice Keyser broke the tie with 7 minutes 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

After a throw-in by Jeff Anderson, the ball was kicked out of Edison’s goal by a Brea-Olinda player, but Keyser intercepted it from 20 yards and sent a low ground ball past Wildcats’ goal keeper Neal Schuster, who had 15 saves.

Forward Chris Kurz scored the second goal for Edison, which is ranked sixth in the Orange County Coaches’ Poll. Again Edison got a throw-in and Kurz got free in front of Brea-Olinda’s goal and kicked a line-drive shot into the goal.

“We played them before and we knew they’d be tough and they’d have a revenge-type of motive,” DiGiovanni said. ‘They were putting things together tonight. I think they had a better percentage of shots, but we just got off the shots (we needed).”

Brea-Olinda’s Mike Brunet collided with Edison’s Mike Niemann early in the second half and hit his head on a sideline bench. He was taken to St. Jude’s Hospital in Fullerton, where he was treated and released.
