Four game-breaking, record-setting runners highlight The Times’ 1991 South Bay All-Star football team.

The all-star backfield of Morningside High quarterback Stais Boseman and tailbacks Koury Clark of Bishop Montgomery, Shayzar Hawkins of Banning and Morell Ollis of Hawthorne combined for 6,542 yards rushing and 83 touchdowns this season, leading their respective teams to winning records.

Boseman, an All-Southern Section basketball player, strengthened his reputation as the South Bay’s finest all-round athlete by accounting for 36 touchdowns and 218 points either running or passing to lead Morningside to its first Southern Section football title. A junior, Boseman is one of three non-seniors on the 23-player all-star first team.

Clark, Hawkins and Ollis each set school single-season rushing records and Ollis became Hawthorne’s career leader as well.

Players named to the first team, along with their parents and coaches, will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast at 9 a.m. Jan. 12 at the Guest Quarters Hotel in Santa Monica. Winners of the South Bay back, coach and lineman of year awards will be announced at the breakfast.

Banning leads the all-star squad with five selections. The Pilots, who were 12-2 and reached the City Section 4-A Division championship game for the third time in four seasons, are represented on the first team by Hawkins, offensive tackle Fitu Toomalatai, defensive end Jimmy Irby, linebacker Jason Grayson and safety Brandon Moore.

Five schools--Morningside, Hawthorne, Redondo, Carson and Serra--placed two players on the team. Representing Morningside, which won the Southern Section Division VIII title, are Boseman and safety Keith Long.

Players named from Bay League champion Hawthorne are Ollis and offensive tackle Jesse Herrera. Carson, which has dominated the all-star team in recent seasons but struggled to a 6-5-1 record with an inexperienced team, placed receiver-running back Theron Hill and linebacker Eran Taulua on the squad.

Redondo was 5-0 at home, including victories over Hawthorne, Beverly Hills and Morningside, but was only 2-5 in away games. The Sea Hawks are represented by offensive tackle Ryan Turner and safety Jeremy Veasey.

Serra won its fifth consecutive Camino Real League title thanks largely to the efforts of all-star selections Chris and Corey Long, the Cavaliers’ twin-brother linebackers.

Completing the offense are Clark, wide receiver Ralph Martinez of Torrance, tackle Shane Daywalt of South Torrance, center Ryan Buxton of Peninsula and kicker David Scanlan of El Segundo.

The remainder of the defensive unit is composed of linemen Sean Powell of Leuzinger and Mike Thomas of North Torrance and linebacker Chris Lopez of San Pedro.

A closer look at the all-stars:

RECEIVERS

Theron Hill (Carson)--One of the South Bay’s most versatile players, Hill excelled as a receiver, running back, defensive back and return specialist. He led Carson in rushing with 861 yards and scoring with 14 touchdowns. He ranked second on the team in receiving with 29 catches for 404 yards. Hill is being recruited by several Division I colleges.

Ralph Martinez (Torrance)--The leading receiver in the area, Martinez set a school record with 71 catches for 1,207 yards and 11 touchdowns operating in Torrance’s pass-oriented offense. Fitu Toomalatai (Banning)--Leader of what many considered the best offensive line in the City Section, Toomalatai was an All-Pacific League selection at tackle. He was a two-year varsity starter at talent-rich Banning and helped the Pilots rush for an area-leading 3,396 yards.

Ryan Turner (Redondo)--An All-Ocean League selection, the 6-5, 250-pound Turner is being recruited by several major colleges, including Stanford, after a successful senior season. His play as a two-way tackle helped Redondo reach the quarterfinals of the Division VIII playoffs.

Ryan Buxton (Peninsula)--A three-year varsity starter, Buxton was rated the top offensive lineman for Peninsula by Coach Gary Kimbrell. “He’s what made our trap (play) go,” Kimbrell said. Buxton, who played center, was named to the All-Bay League first team.

Michael Thomas (North Torrance)--Chosen the Pioneer League lineman of the year, Thomas excelled as a two-way tackle. He is rated highly by Dick Lascola’s Southern California-based Scouting Evaluation Assn.
