Keith Jackson, ABC sportscaster and master of ceremonies at Tuesday’s 62nd annual Kiwanis Rose Bowl Kickoff Luncheon at the Civic Center in Pasadena, made these comments:

--On Erick Anderson of Michigan, who won this year’s Butkus Award: “He’s not only a killer, but he can think.”

--On Bo Schembechler, former Michigan coach: “Bo didn’t come to the luncheon. He thought you were going to charge him.”

Bob Griese, Jackson’s broadcast partner, said after Jackson told the crowd that the Rose Bowl was going to be “one of those paint-swapping games”: “I have to translate for him a lot.” Translation on that one: They’ll butt heads so often you’ll see streaks of Michigan paint on the Washington helmets and vice-versa.

Don James, Washington coach and a University of Miami graduate, said: “Yes, my wife and I are both Miami grads, and we send them some money every year. But this year, before we sent them anything, we told them they had to clean up their act a little bit, cut out all that dancing around.”

Among the guests at Tuesday’s Kiwanis Rose Bowl Luncheon was Ralph Vince.

Vince, 92, a retired judge from Cleveland, was one of the 11 players who played the entire 1922 Rose Bowl game for Washington and Jefferson College, which played Cal to a 0-0 tie.
