PREP ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley Shuts Down Trabuco Hills

Share

Capistrano Valley 6-foot-6 center Steve Ransom was ready for the challenge of guarding Trabuco Hills’ 6-foot-10 Gavin Vanderputten Friday night.

And after applying a physical defense that held Vanderputten to 10 points--two in the second half--Ransom and the Cougars came away with an 83-57 victory at Capistrano Valley High School.

“Before the game I was really psyched to play him,” Ransom said. “He got frustrated in the second half when our zone helped in the middle.”

Capistrano Valley (12-3) led, 40-37, at halftime, but the Cougars weren’t satisfied with their man-to-man defense and switched to zone. The change ignited a 24-12 run in the third quarter.

“We were getting tired in the man defense,” said Cougar junior Corey Kost, who led Capistrano Valley with 17 points. “The zone helped inside and outside.”

Trabuco Hills (10-5) did not score during the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and was outscored, 19-8, in the final quarter.
