Point Loma Nazarene Advances to Title Game

Point Loma Nazarene salvaged an 83-80 victory over Southern Nazarene in the second round of its Crusader Classic Friday night, setting up a championship matchup at 7:30 tonight against George Fox College.

SNU’s Travis Moffett missed a shot from beyond the three-point arc at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime. Instead, it sent SNU into the consolation final against William Jewell at 5:30 today.

For PLNC, Rusty Fallin, who tied SNU’s Wade Wienstroer with a game-high 22 points, hit two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to give the Crusaders (8-6) the 83-80 lead. Fallin had four three-pointers, three in the second half.

In the opener, 12 of 14 players scored for George Fox in a 108-81 rout over William Jewell. With 24 points, Dave Wilson of George Fox and Weldon Stubbs of William Jewell shared game-high honors. George Fox improved to 9-5; William Jewell dropped to 8-8.

UC San Diego had five players score in double figures, and the Tritons defeated Dominican College, 91-53, at home. UCSD (10-4), which led at halftime, 38-24, was led by Chris Moore’s 14 points. Rick Batt, Gib Arnold and John Spence all scored 12. Dominican fell to 2-7.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

University of San Diego Coach Kathy Marpe called the Toreras’ 76-70 victory over Wyoming a “huge win.”

In the nonconference game at Laramie, USD (4-7) controlled the game after Julie Doria hit a baseline jumper with 6:54 left to give USD a 60-58 lead. Jill Shaver led USD with 21 points. Chris Enger added 12 points and Debbie Gollnick 11, including three three-point baskets.

Marie Kauffman led Wyoming (9-4) with 20 points.

Rochelle Lightner had 19 points and nine rebounds, and Camille Armijo had 18 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 91-45 victory over The Master’s College. Point Loma (10-4), which ran to a 52-28 halftime lead, limited Master’s to 33% shooting.

FOOTBALL

San Diego State’s Patrick Rowe will play in today’s Hula Bowl, a game in Honolulu for college seniors. Rowe, a receiver, in on the West squad coached by LaVell Edwards of Brigham Young, Rich Ellerson of Hawaii and Grant Teaff of Baylor.
