School: Cypress High

Sport: Basketball

Position: Guard

Class: Senior

Earlier this season, Laguana, a sharp-shooting point guard, was having some problems with scoring consistently because defenders were overplaying his outside shot. Standing only 5 feet 7, Laguana was reluctant to drive and risk having his shots blocked inside. But Cypress Coach Kevin Loftus says Laguana has worked on his drive and improved his game. “He’s had a few shots blocked but he’s more comfortable with it,” Loftus said. Laguana scored a team-high 16 points in each of two Cypress victories last week. In a 67-57 upset of Buena Park, he added five steals and seven assists. Against Loara, he had eight steals and six assists in leading the Centurions (8-7) to their third consecutive victory. In the first game of the streak, Laguana broke the school’s single-game record by scoring 47 points in an 80-64 victory over Los Amigos in a consolation game of the Century tournament.

Other top performers:

Tom Airey, who tied his Orange County single-game record of 10 three-point shots and scored 32 points in Capistrano Valley’s 90-56 victory over Mission Viejo.

Phil Drake, who completed his third shutout of the season, making 10 saves for Mission Viejo in a 1-0 victory over then-No. 5 Capistrano Valley in a South Coast League boys’ soccer opener.
