La Jolla Country Day Coach Bill Cahoone acknowledges his team plays an “up-tempo game.”

Fast took the Torres far Tuesday night in a Coastal League game against Mountain Empire.

Country Day set a San Diego Section record for points in a 143-60 victory. The output surpassed the record of 136 set by Sweetwater against Coronado in November 1984. Country Day scored 43 points in the first quarter and 39 in the fourth, the second and third highest quarter totals, respectively, in Section history.

“The only thing we were aware of (was that) our school record was 113,” said Calhoone, who added that his team pressed the first five minutes and mixed in man-to-man and zone defenses thereafter. “Since we had 73 at half and (both teams) were playing an up-tempo game, we were pretty comfortable about doing something.”

Six of Country Day’s nine players reached double figures, led by guard Larry Cheng with 31 points. Forward Jason Boyle had 30 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds, and center Everett Alexander added 22 points.

Said Cahoone: “It was one of those nights everything went in.”
