Although Ventura College last week established itself as the dominant men’s basketball team in the Western State Conference with a 93-67 thumping of Canyons in an interdivision game, no Pirate player has outstanding statistics.

Ventura’s leading scorer, Reggie Phillips, is averaging 14.2 points a game. The Pirates’ leading rebounder, Derrick Pugh, is averaging 8.1 rebounds, and Vince Langston leads the team in assists with 5.3 a game.

The only statistics with which Coach Philip Mathews really concerns himself are wins, losses, team offense and team defense.

Ventura, 20-4 entering Wednesday’s game against West L. A. and the sixth-ranked team in the J. C. Athletic Bureau state poll, ranked second in the WSC in offense (81 points a game) and first in defense (68.2) at the start of the week.

Keith Gibbs and Andre Chevalier have been the go-to guys the Cal State Northridge offense needed after the Matadors opened the season with 10 consecutive losses.

In the past six games, Gibbs is averaging 17.3 points for Northridge (4-12), and Chevalier has a 14.1 average during that span.

“I love the consistency those guys are giving us right now,” Coach Pete Cassidy said.

Every player on the Cal Lutheran basketball team scored in a 91-47 win over La Sierra on Saturday night. The entire team also scored in an 88-45 win over Keilor, Australia, earlier this season in an exhibition game.

Women: Paula Page of Antelope Valley began the week as the region’s leading junior college scorer (22.2) and rebounder (11.9), and she is closing in on four school records heading into Friday night’s Foothill Conference game at Victor Valley.

Page, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Quartz Hill High, ranks second on the Antelope Valley list in career points (815) and free throws made (179) and is third in field goals made (318) and rebounds (498). At her current pace, Page should own the career records after the next two or three games.
