La Jolla High’s John Zuanich and La Jolla Country Day’s Rashaan Salaam, both first-team Times All-County selections on defense, announced they had accepted football scholarships.

Salaam, who rushed for 4,985 yards and scored more than 100 touchdowns in 25 games at LJCD, will play tailback at Colorado. Zuanich, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound free safety, committed to Duke University.

Salaam (6-2, 200) ended a bitter recruiting war that included Cal, UCLA, Washington and Notre Dame. His decision came Sunday night, upon returning from a trip to Boulder, Colo., and was a surprise considering he nearly committed to Cal several weeks ago.

“Up until putting him on the plane (to go to Colorado) he was uncertain,” LJCD Coach Rick Woods said. “He asked me to call up Stanford, to try to get an unofficial visit there. He was still talking to Cal. But he came back from Colorado beaming. He was their No. 1 recruit.”

Zuanich said he liked his future with the Blue Demons and was charmed by the atmosphere in Durham, N.C.

“The minute I stepped off the plane, the campus . . . it was beautiful; I like the South,” Zuanich said. “I’m more of a pass-coverage safety, and that’s what they need there.”
