BASEBALL

Third baseman Scott Coolbaugh and left-handed pitcher Pat Clements are among eight non-roster players invited to participate in the Padres’ spring training.

Others asked to attend are: right-handed pitchers Mike York, 27, and Tim Scott, 25; catchers Mike Basso, 27, Dan Walters, 25, and Kevin Higgins, 25, and outfielder Kevin Ward.

Clements missed most of the 1991 season because of shoulder surgery, appearing in 12 games with the Padres (1-0, 3.77) and 11 games at triple-A Las Vegas (0-0, 6.75).

Coolbaugh batted .217 in 60 games with the Padres this past season, had two home runs and 15 RBIs.

Infielder Jose Valentin and outfielder Will Taylor have signed one-year contracts with the Padres. Valentin, 22, batted .251 with 17 home runs and 68 RBIs in 129 games for double-A Wichita. Taylor, 23, averaged .259 with four homers and 33 RBIs and a Pacific Coast League-leading 62 stolen bases for Las Vegas.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego State and Fresno State played through 13 ties at Peterson Gym and neither team could forge a lead of more than six, which SDSU had with just over four minutes remaining. Fresno State, erased it, however, and pulled out an 86-84 victory.

Fresno State (8-7) had five players score in double figures, including Dana Steward, who scored 20.

The Aztecs (9-5) relied on three players: Kieishsha Garnes (32 points), Michelle Suman (21) and Falisha Wright (14). Garnes also had 11 of the Aztecs’ 30 rebounds.

Clark University scored a 75-50 victory over visiting UC San Diego. Kim Wells led Clark (10-3) with 20 points, and Cari Young led the Tritons (9-6) with 18 points.

Point Loma Nazarene, which trailed at halftime by one, used a 12-point run early in the second half to pull out a 75-55 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Cal Baptist (13-8, 2-3).

Stacee Eggers scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the final 20:00 for PLNC (11-6, 2-2).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Donnie Buettner took an inbound pass from Sean Giles with two seconds left and nailed a three-point shot from the left corner to lift Point Loma Nazarene to a 76-74 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Cal Baptist.

Buettner finished with 24 points, making nine of 15 shots. Rusty Fallin added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Crusaders (10-8, 2-1).

Guard Lance Williams (24 points) made a three-point shot with 1:15 left to give Cal Baptist a 74-73 lead.

PLNC’s Fallin missed a shot with seven seconds left and after a scramble and jump ball call, PLNC had the possession arrow in its favor and got the ball with two seconds left.

Cal Baptist made seven three-pointers in the first seven minutes and led by as many as 16 in the first half and 41-38 at halftime.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego lost to USC, 15-5, 15-6, 15-9, at Edison High School in Huntington Beach and fell to 0-4. It was USC’s season-opener. Jason Mulholland had 20 kills for USC and Lumson Lum had 18 for UCSD.
