University of San Diego, with a chance to pull into a tie for first in the West Coast Conference, missed a shot in the lane in the closing seconds and fell to the University of Portland, 74-72, in the USD Sports Center.

Portland (6-9, 3-0) remained the only unbeaten team in the WCC. The Toreras (6-9, 1-2), played without center Chris Enger (stress fracture).

Portland took a 44-34 halftime lead but USD made a late comeback. Jill Shaver, who scored 15 of her 22 points in the second half, hit a long jumper to give USD its final lead, 72-70, with 2:03 left.

Portland went to Sheldon, whose shot in the lane was blocked by Lynda Jones. Brynn Prigge recovered the loose ball and scored with 28 seconds left.

Shaver later got a clear shot in the lane but missed and Portland ran out the clock.

Debbie Gollnick had 10 points for the Toreras, and Jones added nine points and a game-high nine rebounds. Conference scoring leader Martha Sheldon had a game-high 28 points for Portland.

Kieishsha Garnes scored a game-high 27 points to lead San Diego State to an 83-63 victory over visiting Wyoming in a Western Athletic Conference game. SDSU led 49-40 with 9:57 remaining, but went on a 13-3 run to put the game away. Falisha Wright had 19 points and Michelle Suman added 11 for SDSU (10-5, 2-0) Wyoming fell to 9-7 and 0-3.
