Stand By and Rick Farrington each made successful debuts Friday on the opening night of the winter harness meet at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Farrington drove Stand By to the victory in the featured $12,000 Filly and Mare Invitational. Stand By is a 6-year-old mare making her first start in the United States after winning eight of 14 in New Zealand last year.

Stand By was last in the five-horse field with an eighth of a mile to go.

“I moved out on the backstretch because I didn’t want to get caught (inside),” said Farrington, who raced most recently at The Meadowlands in New Jersey. “She paced home well.”

Stand By completed the mile in 1:58 1/5 and paid $15.20, $4.80 and $2.80. Cool Charm Girl returned $4.80 and $2.80 and Jiffy’s Girl $2.80.

Bag A Few, the 1991 horse of the meet and the race’s even-money favorite, finished fifth.
