In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Hawaii 71, Cal State Fullerton 64--The Titans gave the 17th-ranked Rainbows a scare, trimming a 17-point deficit to four in the second half, but Alicia Pontious’ three-point play with 54 seconds left and five free throws in the final 37 seconds ended the upset bid.

Fresno State 84, UC Irvine 68--Jinelle Williams, held scorless in the first half, tied a Bren Center women’s record with 21 second-half points, but the Anteaters (4-12, 0-7) were unable to avoid their seventh consecutive loss.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Chapman 68, UC Riverside 64--Linda Kirby scored 21 points to help Chapman (8-9, 2-3 in the CCAA) to its second consecutive conference victory.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 75, Christ College Irvine 57--Genevieve Graff had 15 points despite Christ College Irvine’s (15-3, 4-1) first conference loss to Fresno Pacific (17-2, 5-0).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 72, Christ College Irvine 48--Charles Luckford had 17 points in Christ College Irvine’s road loss.

In the Adidas Invitation Tennis Championships:

Leach Reaches Final--Laguna Beach High graduate Jon Leach, now a USC sophomore, teamed with Brian MacPhie for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 semifinal victory over Bill Behrens and Mark Knowles of UCLA at Hyatt Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells.

In nonconference men’s swimming and diving:

UC Irvine 142, Cal State Northridge 95--Bret Foreman and Jeff Klatt each won individual events and swam a leg on the Anteaters victorious 400-yard medley relay at Cal State Northridge.

In nonconference women’s swimming and diving:

Cal State Northridge 140, UC Irvine 91--Laurel Hooper won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles and Julie Rydquist the one- and three-meter diving for the Anteaters (8-4).
