McCandless, Felix to Play Volleyball for Dons

Sarah McCandless of Torrey Pines and Amber Felix of La Jolla signed national letters of intent to play volleyball at the University of San Francisco, and Felix’s teammate Leah Williams signed with Colorado, it was announced Wednesday.

McCandless and Felix are members of the San Diego Volleyball Club, for which McCandless serves as captain. McCandless was named first team All Section and led Torrey Pines to the state quarterfinals and a national top-20 ranking.

Felix, a two-time All-Section first-team selection, and Williams helped La Jolla to a 25-4 record.

BASEBALL

Greg Quam had a triple and scored, but San Diego State’s offense was otherwise dreadful in a 4-2 nonconference loss to Southern California College at Smith Field. SDSU (1-1) managed only four hits and lost to SCC for only the second time in 14 meetings.

SCC (1-1) scored two runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and hand Rob Callaway (0-1) the loss.

FOOTBALL

Dennis Arey, a former San Diego State standout wide receiver, was selected by the Orlando Thunder in the 26th round of the World League of American Football draft Wednesday. Arey, 23, who caught 68 passes as an Aztec senior in 1990, was waived by the Cincinnati Bengals in August.

Damon Baldwin, a two-year starter at guard who completed his eligibility in 1989, was picked by the champion London Monarchs in the 21st round.

MEN’S GOLF

Bill Isbell shot a two-over par 74 at Rancho San Diego to give the University of San Diego a 395-403 victory over Point Loma Nazarene. Isbell was three shots better than teammate Lance Seymour and four better than PLNC’s Mark Hellman and USD’s Steve Brown.
