PREP NOTES : Bishop Amat Shoots Down Mater Dei’s New Defense
With Mater Dei well ahead of Bishop Amat during a recent basketball game, Monarch assistant Dave Taylor decided to try out a new defense.
Taylor, the team’s defensive coach, put the Monarchs in a trapping zone. The first time down, the Lancers’ Jelani Gardner drove the baseline and hit a three-point field goal.
This did not please Mater Dei head Coach Gary McKnight, who turned to Taylor and said: “What’s that defense?”
Said Taylor: “I just want to see it.”
McKnight smiled and said: “To see what? How many three-pointers Gardner can make?”
The next time down, Bishop Amat guard Rashid Strode drove the baseline against the trap and hit a jump shot.
Taylor stood up and said. “OK, guys, next time down we’re back to man to man.”
