The Peninsula High girls’ basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, will travel Saturday to play Buena High of Ventura in a nonleague game at 7:30 p.m. at Ventura College.

Peninsula (21-0) is ranked No. 1 in the state among Division I schools by Cal-Hi Sports newsletter. Buena (18-1) is ranked No. 5. The contest represents the last challenging game for Peninsula before the start of the CIF Southern Section playoffs Feb. 22.

Joe Vaughan, Buena’s veteran coach, recently won his 400th career game. The Bulldogs are traditionally one of the top teams in Southern California. They won Southern Section titles in 1980 and 1984.
