SPORTSCOPE : CS Dominguez Hills Men’s Basketball Team Plays Two Road Games

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will open the second half of California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play on the road tonight against Cal State Bakersfield.

Dominguez Hills, 12-8 overall and tied for third in the CCAA with Cal Poly Pomona at 4-3, will play at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 8:05 p.m. Saturday.

Bakersfield (17-3, 6-1), which has won or shared the conference title three of the past four seasons, is 18th in the NCAA Division II poll. It is tied for first in the CCAA with UC Riverside. San Luis Obispo (15-4, 3-4) is tied for fifth in the conference with Cal State San Bernardino.

Dominguez Hills defeated Chapman, 62-57, last week behind center Michael Moore’s 16 points. That enabled the 6-foot-7 senior to regain the team scoring lead with an average of 10.2 points.

Freshman guard Chris Thompson is averaging 10.1 points and has a team-high 47 assists. Sophomore forward John Brown is averaging five rebounds.

In January, the Toros defeated San Luis Obispo, 68-64, but lost to Bakersfield, 50-37.

Bakersfield, which defeated San Luis Obispo, 81-65, last week, is led by senior forward Beau Redstone and guards Fred Eckles and Kenny Warren. The 6-5 Redstone ranks among the conference leaders with a 13.9-point average and is first in rebounding at 10.4.

San Luis Obispo is led by 6-8 center Shawn Kirkeby, who leads the conference in scoring at 16.9. He missed the first game against Dominguez Hills because of an ankle injury.

The Mustangs also have three outstanding shooters at guard in Greg Paulson, Bill Archer and Jeff Oliver.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team will try to end a six-game losing streak when it plays host to West Coast Conference opponents University of San Diego and Santa Clara.

Loyola Marymount (6-13, 0-6) plays San Diego at 5:20 p.m. today and Santa Clara at 5:20 p.m. Saturday.

Santa Clara, which is in contention for the conference title, is 12-6 and 4-1. San Diego is 6-11 and 1-4. Santa Clara is one-half game behind co-leaders San Francisco and Portland.

Loyola, which is hoping to benefit from playing five of its next seven conference games at home, has been led throughout the season by forward Joelle Longobardi. The 6-foot senior is averaging a team-leading 14.3 points and 7.2 rebounds.

San Diego has lost four consecutive games. The Toreras are led by forwards Jill Shaver, who averages 15.4 points, and Lynda Jones, who averages 7.1 rebounds.

Santa Clara, which has won three consecutive games, is led by guard Melissa King. She has team-leading averages of 19.8 points, 4.8 assists and 3.4 steals. Center Amy Vanos averages nine rebounds.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team will play host to CCAA rivals Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 tonight and UC Riverside at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Dominguez Hills (13-9, 5-2) can clinch its first-ever CCAA playoff berth with two victories.

Riverside (7-13, 4-3) defeated Dominguez Hills, 56-51, in overtime last month. San Bernardino is 7-14 and 1-6.

Riverside has been led by junior center Rachel Rosario, who ranks among the conference leaders with averages of 15.3 points and 12.3 rebounds.

Dominguez Hills has defeated San Bernardino twice this season, including a 57-49 overtime game last month at San Bernardino.

The Toros beat Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 72-56, and Chapman, 69-56, last week.

Dominguez Hills has been led by senior forward Cheri Bullet, who averages 14.4 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Dionne Vanlandingham averages 10.7 points and 6.6 rebounds.

Former International Boxing Federation featherweight champion Jorge Paez, who was scheduled to fight Jose Luis Vasquez Monday night at the Forum, is ill with flu and has been scratched from the card.

After seeing a doctor on Thursday, Paez was advised not to fight, according to manager Ignacio Huizar. The Forum is searching for a replacement to fight Vasquez, who arrived from his native Puerto Rico Wednesday night.

Two other 10-round bouts remain intact. Fidel Avendano will fight David Sample in a battle of lightweights and Armando Castro will fight Antonio Ramirez in a matchup of super flyweights.

The card begins at 7 p.m.

Boys and girls in grades five through eight will compete in the Partnership in the Community three-on-three basketball tournament at 9 a.m. Feb. 29 in Hawthorne.

The tournament has a limit of 16 teams. Each team must have four players, including a substitute.

Forms are at the Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Department, 3901 El Segundo Blvd. The deadline is Feb. 21.
