SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : Magic Is Back With All Stars

Magic Johnson’s return to basketball is expected to draw viewers away from the Winter Olympics, on a busy sports television weekend that will include college basketball, golf and tennis.

* Winter Olympics: CBS (Channels 2 and 8) will begin its coverage of the XVI Winter Olympics at Albertville, France, at 1 p.m. today with a hockey game between Switzerland and the Unified Team. The opening ceremonies will air at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the men’s luge, women’s cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, U.S.-Italy hockey, women’s speed skating and ski jumping will air from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The 8-11 p.m. slot will be devoted to men’s downhill skiing and pairs figure skating.

* Pro Basketball: The NBA’s All-Star Weekend will get under way with the slam dunk and three-point shooting contests and the legends game at 4 p.m. today on TNT. Tip-off for Sunday’s game is scheduled for 12:40 p.m. on Channels 4, 36 and 39.

* College Basketball: No. 4 UCLA will play host to Washington State at 3 p.m. today on Channels 2 and 63. Prime Ticket will have a delayed broadcast today at 5 p.m. of No. 16 USC vs. Washington. Today’s other telecasts involving teams ranked by the Associated Press will match No. 1 Duke and LSU (10:45 a.m., Channels 2 and 8) and No. 5 Arkansas and Memphis State (11 a.m., ESPN). Sunday’s games will feature No. 6 Indiana against Iowa (9 a.m., Channels 2 and 8) and No. 15 Michigan and Notre Dame (9:30 a.m., Channels 4, 36 and 39).

* Other Sports: The Kings will make two Prime Ticket appearances this weekend: today at 11 a.m. vs. Pittsburgh and Sunday at 4 p.m. vs. Buffalo.

In golf, TBS will carry the Hawaiian Open at 3 p.m. today and Sunday. The Volvo Tennis/San Francisco tournament will air delayed on Prime Ticket today at 2:30 and 11 p.m., and Sunday at 10:30 p.m.
