ROUNDUP : Gonzalez’s 19 Help Huntington Beach Beat Fountain Valley

Tony Gonzalez scored 19 points, seven in the third quarter, to help Huntington Beach defeat Fountain Valley, 67-48, in Sunset League boys’ basketball Saturday at Fountain Valley High.

“Tony was an absolute stud, and he’s only a sophomore. He had a really good floor game,” Huntington Beach Coach Roy Miller said.

Gonzalez also had 17 rebounds and six blocked shots.

The score was tied, 22-22, at the half. In the third quarter, the Oilers switched their defense and pulled ahead by 13, 38-25, in the first 3 minutes, 30 seconds of the quarter.

“I changed our defense from man to zone. This created some turnovers for Huntington Beach early and allowed us to take the lead and dictate the second half,” Miller said.

Against the modified zone, Fountain Valley (11-11, 6-4 league) hit only hit five of 11 field goal attempts and was outscored, 25-12, in the third quarter.

Fountain Valley’s Chris Rieff had 12 points and seven rebounds. Guy Vaccaro (10 points) had two three-pointers.

Jeff Vanderwal had 13 points and Tommy Walden 11 for Huntington Beach (14-10, 7-4).
