After three quarters Friday night, Edison had a 32-point lead against Westminster, Jessie had 34 points and Edison Coach Jon Borchert had a minor dilemma: Should he leave Jessie in the game to go after the school’s single-game scoring record of 41? Jessie stayed in, and supported by the Chargers’ reserves, scored the nine points that gave him 43, surpassing Bob Vogelsang, who scored 41 in a game in 1976. “There have been so many times that I’ve taken him out in that situation,” Borchert said. “But he’s the best player Edison has ever had and I thought he deserved to have the record.” Jessie averaged 31.7 points and 15.3 rebounds in three Edison victories during the week, helping the Chargers take over first place by one game with two games remaining. Jessie scored 30 points, including six in overtime, in a 62-57 victory over Marina, which was then in first place.

Other top performers:

Matt Kordik, who scored 23 points for Esperanza in each of two Empire League victories over Loara and Los Alamitos, moving the Aztecs into a first-place tie with Los Alamitos.
