SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Quartz Hill High spread the wealth around Tuesday night, hitting visiting Canyon from every angle in a 65-34 victory that gave the Rebels at least a share of their second consecutive Golden League title.

“No one is going to finish above us,” first-year Quartz Hill Coach Steve Hurst said.

And the only team that has a chance of finishing equal to the Rebels (15-7, 8-1 in league play) is Ridgecrest Burroughs, which beat Palmdale on Tuesday to move to 13-6, 7-2. That leaves the Burros a game behind Quartz Hill in the league standings with one to play.

Quartz Hill was off and running from the start. Nine players scored, three in double figures, in the team’s most lopsided win this season.

Quartz Hill senior guard Dan Prince led all scorers with 17 points. Prince, who is averaging 19.9 points a game, likely would have scored more had he handled the ball more often.

Forward Ryan Beckstead scored 14 points and center Erick Taylor added 11 to go with 16 rebounds. Every Quartz Hill starter and four reserves scored while only five Canyon players scored, three of them starters.

“Quartz Hill is an outstanding team and they completely outplayed us from start to finish,” Canyon Coach Greg Hayes said.

Not exactly. Canyon (12-11, 4-5) kept close early, trailing, 8-7, after one quarter in which Prince was held scoreless.

Quartz Hill launched a 16-6 run to begin the second quarter and the game was never close after that. Canyon went eight minutes in the first half without a field goal.

Prince scored six points in the second quarter, Beckstead five, Taylor four and guard Art Mack four.

“We’re running the same plays we’ve always run,” Hurst said. “Some guys are just stepping up. Prince has had the green light all along. Beckstead has had the green light all along. The other guys have just had to learn where they fit into the offense.”

Said Beckstead: “I know I’m a lot more patient and I feel a lot more confident.”

Quartz Hill closed the game with an 18-0 run in the final six minutes. In one stretch, four players scored in four consecutive trips down the floor.
