GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cougars Edge Dana Hills; Streak at 21

Capistrano Valley, ranked second in Orange County, defeated unranked Dana Hills, 43-39, Thursday in a South Coast League game at Dana Hills.

It was the 21st consecutive victory for Capistrano Valley after losing to Brea-Olinda in the finals of the Irvine tournament. Keri Ernisse made two free throws with seven seconds remaining to provide the final margin, but the Cougars (24-1, 10-0 in league) needed a three-point play by Alisa Farr with about a minute left to take the lead.

Farr, who was fouled while making a driving layup, made the free throw to give Capistrano Valley a 41-39 lead. Farr scored a game-high 15 points. Keri Reiger had 13 points and eight rebounds for Dana Hills (16-8, 6-4).

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 44, Bishop Amat 27--Adrienne Botana had 13 points for the Monarchs (10-11, 5-3), who finished in second place. The teams were tied, 2-2, after one quarter, before Mater Dei outscored Bishop Amat, 12-5, in the second quarter.

Santa Margarita 61, St Joseph’s 46--Sophomore Lesley Nolan had 18 points and 11 rebounds for league-champion Santa Margarita, which finished 16-8 and 7-1.

In the Century League:

El Modena 35, Orange 19--Melizza Benitez had 12 points, 11 rebounds and four steals to lead El Modena (13-6, 9-1) to its second consecutive league championship.

Villa Park 50, Foothill 33--Tara Earl had seven of her 21 points in the third quarter as the Spartans outscored the Knights, 20-6, to overcome a 21-17 halftime deficit.

Erica Vasquez had 11 points and Tiffany Dawson 10 for Foothill (1-18, 1-9). Kim Yetter added 14 for Villa Park (7-12, 4-6).

Canyon 45, Santa Ana Valley 41--Late baskets by Lisa Petronis (17 points, nine rebounds) and Erin Waggoner (12 points, six assists) sealed the victory for the Comanches (13-8, 8-2). Tracey Thomas had 13 points for Santa Ana Valley (13-9, 7-3).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 54, El Dorado 42--Jessica Eggleston had 16 points and 23 rebounds for Cypress (18-4, 10-0), which won its 13th consecutive game and second consecutive league championship. Lupe Nava had 21 points for the Centurions and Julie Adams added 11 points and 18 rebounds. Erin Vessey led league runner-up El Dorado with 10 points.

Katella 55, Esperanza 47--Chris Carrillo had 18 points for host Katella (10-12, 5-5), which scored the first seven points of the game.

Los Alamitos 46 Loara 43--Cindy Yamasaki had 13 points and sister Tritia Yamasaki had seven points for visiting Los Alamitos (3-7, 11-12).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 59, Fullerton 57--Brandee Richardson had 13 points and Jenny Gadd and Audra Gamst both scored 10 points for second-place Troy (15-6, 7-3), which fought back a barrage of three-point shots by Fullerton. Marnellia Misa had five three-pointers for host Fullerton.

Sonora 60, Buena Park 43--Chris Nonis scored 16 points, including six of six free throws, for Sonora (4-6). Barbara Crawther added 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Jodie Fister had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 43, Brethren Christian 33--Alana Kempton scored 12 points and Joanna Giforos added eight points and 10 rebounds for Whittier Christian (4-12, 3-9).

In the Orange League:

Savanna 57, Magnolia 33--Sara Works scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds for Savanna (17-6, 7-3), which finished second in league. Stacey Aliff added 13 points for the Rebels.

Brea-Olinda 84, Valencia 35--The Ladycats (23-2, 10-0) finished the regular season with their 51st consecutive league victory. Jody Anton led Brea with 15 points, and Colleen Hudson added 12.

Western 53, Anaheim 31--Center Kwanzaa Gibson had 18 points as the Pioneers evened their record at 10-10, 5-5. Trina DeSylvia had 13 for the Colonists (0-17, 0-10).

In the Sunset League:

Marina 42, Santa Ana 34--Barbara Kraus had 14 points for the Vikings, who won their second consecutive league championship. Aimee Perioat added 13 points for Marina. Santa Ana fell to 7-14, 1-11.

Ocean View 65, Fountain Valley 44--Senior Kristin Brun made four of her six three-point attempts and had seven assists for Ocean View, which finished the regular season at 18-6, 9-3.

Tricia Lindquist had 17 points for the Seahawks, and teammate Kristy Bell grabbed seven rebounds.

In nonleague play:

Downey Pius X 46, Rosary 45--Gina Deleon’s free throw with no time left gave the visiting Warriors the victory. Center Sherise Sandox scored 21 points for Pius X. Rosary finished regular-season play 7-12.
