COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal Lutheran Relieved by Norville’s Effort, 8-5

Junior left-hander Pat Norville pitched 6 2/3 innings of three-hit relief and Cal Lutheran scored five times in the sixth inning to defeat The Master’s, 8-5, in a nonconference college baseball game at Cal Lutheran on Friday.

Norville (1-0) relieved starter Steve Dempsey in the third inning and allowed just one run, on a solo homer by Joe Pence in the seventh. Norville struck out three and walked none.

Cal Lutheran (3-0) trailed, 4-0, before catcher Eddie Lample lined a two-run double in the second inning. The Kingsmen scored five runs in the sixth, sparked by Jim Fifer’s third home run.

Lample also homered, his first.

Chris Beck took the loss for Master’s (2-3).

Cal Lutheran is scheduled to play host to UC San Diego in a noon doubleheader today, weather permitting.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge at Arizona tournament--The Matadors won one game and lost two on the tournament’s first day, bowing to 17th-ranked Minnesota and No. 12 Cal State Long Beach before rebounding to beat unranked New Mexico State.

Northridge lost to Minnesota, 2-0, and to Long Beach, 5-4, and the first inning in each game proved to be the Matadors’ downfall.

Minnesota scored two earned runs in the first inning off Northridge senior right-hander Cami Allen (0-2) in the first game. Allen allowed five hits, four walks and struck out four.

Against Long Beach (2-0), senior right-hander Heather Lindstrom (0-3) allowed five earned runs and six hits in the first inning. Jackie Volkert relieved Lindstrom in the second inning and threw six shutout innings, allowing three hits.

Sophomore Beth Calcante hit a two-run home run in the first inning against Long Beach, and Patti Pearson went two for three with a double.

The Matadors (3-6) had little trouble against New Mexico St. (1-4). Northridge, which had 10 hits in its lone victory, scored three runs in the first inning on Pearson’s two-out home run to left. Calcante went two for three and scored twice.

Right-hander Kathy Blake (2-1) allowed four hits and two walks and struck out two to gain the win.

The Matadors will face 10th-ranked Texas A&M; this morning and fifth-ranked Cal State Fullerton in the afternoon.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. De Anza, 15-3, 15-3, 15-9--Rich Lake had a team-high 12 kills to lead Pierce (2-0) in a nonconference match at home.

Matt Knepper and Lee Bradford each added six kills for Pierce.
