SOUTHERN SECTION WRESTLING PAIRINGS : Top-Seeded Canyon to Face San Clemente Wednesday

The Canyon wrestling team is the top-seeded squad and will play host to the first round of the first-ever Southern Section Division 4-A team playoffs Wednesday.

Canyon, ranked first in Orange County and winner of 12 consecutive Century League titles and 85 consecutive dual matches, will face second-place San Clemente, from the South Coast League, at 2:30 p.m. Also at Canyon, Empire League champion El Dorado plays Channel Islands, Sunset League champion Huntington Beach plays El Monte and Central plays Fontana.

South Coast League champions Dana Hills and Century League runner-up El Modena will compete at Indio High School, whose team is second-seeded. Also at Indio, Esperanza will meet Thousand Oaks and Westminster will meet El Monte Arroyo.

This is the first season the Southern Section has offered a dual-meet tournament. The winner from each eight-team preliminary will advance to the finals, Feb. 27 at Edison High.

In 3-A, Savanna, ranked No. 2 in Orange County, will meet Millikan in the first round at Ventura High. Ventura’s team is top-seeded. Valencia, ranked third, will meet Long Beach Jordan at Torrance, which has the second-seeded team.

Defending 1-A champion Calvary Chapel is second-seeded and will play host to one of the preliminaries. Calvary Chapel will meet Highland in the first round.

Other county teams competing are University, Century and Buena Park, which visits Etiwanda in the 2-A, Saddleback, which will wrestle at Temecula Valley in the 2-A, and Rancho Alamitos, which is at Norwalk Glenn in 1-A.
