COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Antelope Valley Claims Title, 103-87

Antelope Valley College won its third consecutive Foothill Conference basketball title with a 103-87 victory over host Desert in a conference finale Wednesday night.

D. J. Jackson had game-high totals of 33 points and 14 rebounds and Jason Grimes was 10 for 10 from the field.

The victory guarantees that Antelope Valley (19-12, 13-3 in conference play) will open the first round of the Southern California regional on Feb. 29 at home.

Jackson scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the second half. Grimes scored 21 points and Chris Walters added 13 points and 11 assists.

In other men’s basketball games:

Ventura 117, Moorpark 54--Reggie Phillips led all scorers with 20 points, sparking the Pirates (28-4, 7-0) to a Western State Conference North Division win at Moorpark.

Oxnard 61, Santa Barbara 55 (OT)--Shawn Talley scored a team-high 16 points and Marlowe Durmiendo hit four consecutive free throws in overtime to lead the Condors (18-11, 6-2) to a WSC North Division win at Santa Barbara. Haji Dunn led Santa Barbara with 26 points.

BASEBALL

Valley 8, Mt. San Antonio 2; Valley 5, Chaffey 3-- Manny Fernandez (1-2) struck out eight and did not allow an earned run in six innings to lead Valley past the host school in its Mt. San Antonio College tournament opener. Mario Joy had two hits to lead the Monarchs past Chaffey in their second game.

The Master’s 9, Albertson 2--Darin Brebes hit a two-run home run and Dan O’Sullivan added a solo homer for host Master’s in a nonconference game.

Joe Pence was three for four for Master’s (3-5).

Harbor 10, Canyons 5--Mike Kerber and Jeff Hairell hit home runs for host Canyons (1-5) in a nonconference game. Harbor is 12-3.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 93, Glendale 58--Falicia Stanley scored 18 points for Valley (26-4, 13-1), which led, 53-14, at halftime of a WSC South Division game at Glendale.

Antelope Valley 86, Desert 70--Paula Page had 19 points and 19 rebounds for visiting Antelope Valley in a Foothill Conference game.

Ventura 83, Moorpark 69--Cori Herman had 23 points and 13 rebounds and Erica Probasco added 13 points to guide the Pirates (24-6, 12-1) to a WSC North Division road victory.
