SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

By the time Canyon finally got a shot in the second quarter Friday night, Woodbridge was long gone.

Woodbridge went on a 13-0 run to open the second quarter and then cruised to a 73-31 victory in a first-round Southern Section Division II-AA boys’ basketball game at Woodbridge.

The Warriors (17-6) advance to the second round Tuesday against Sunny Hills at a site to be determined.

Canyon (11-14) spent much of the first half turning the ball over against Woodbridge’s 1-2-2 full-court trap. The Comanches committed nine of their 16 first-half turnovers to start the second quarter, going 4 minutes 50 seconds without a shot or a point.

Meanwhile, Woodbridge was scoring on layups after steals and drilling three-pointers against Canyon’s zone. Before the Comanches held on long enough to get a shot at the 3:10 mark, the Warriors had a 33-8 lead.

“The last time we played Canyon (in December), we didn’t press at all,” Woodbridge Coach Bill Shannon said. “I figured we’d try and mix things up this time, and the way we executed (the trap) got us playing our tempo.”

Ethan Twer scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the first half, and Arash Ghazinoor made three three-pointers before halftime.

Woodbridge led, 39-13, at halftime and, 61-24, after three quarters.

Ghazinoor finished with 13 points and Todd Loewe (11) and Ryan Sunderman (10) also scored in double figures for the Warriors.

Tony Walker led Canyon with 10 points. The Comanches finished with 30 turnovers.
