PREP BASEBALL 1992: GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE : Los Amigos

OUTLOOK

Although the sixth-place Lobos were never in the eight-team league race last season, finishing eight games behind champion Santiago, Pruter is looking for his team to earn a playoff spot this year. “This is a legitimate team,” Pruter said. “We have a young, bright team with a good work ethic. Many are college-bound regardless of athletics.” Helping give Los Amigos respectability is all-leaguer Portillo, who batted .400 with two home runs and 24 runs batted in and who appears headed for double duty at pitcher and the outfield. “He is a very key player for us,” Pruter said. “He can really hit the ball, and hopefully we can put him on the mound, too. He spot pitched last year, but that was about it.” Right-handed senior Karl Eidlhuber, 6 feet 1 and 160 pounds, also should figure prominently pitching for the Lobos. “He’s built like a roll of dimes, but he can throw bullets,” Pruter said. Defensively, however, Los Amigos suffered a severe blow in the infield when a projected starter was declared academically ineligible. Pruter said he’ll fill the vacancy with Martell (last year’s most valuable player on the junior varsity) or Grudt (.280 with two homers and 15 RBIs). Smith, who batted .250 in 1991, will help where needed as a utility player.
