CSUN’s Kunishima Named Most Valuable Swimmer at PCC Meet

Senior John Kunishima of Cal State Northridge earned most valuable swimmer honors at the Pacific Collegiate Conference swimming championships at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach over the weekend.

Kunishima won the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute 51.70 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 45.37. He also swam on three of the Matadors’ victorious and meet record-setting relay teams. Northridge finished third in the meet.

Kunishima swam the leadoff legs of the 800, 400 and 200 freestyle relays.

Juniors Shawn Bankhead of Cleveland High and Joe Wyatt of Kennedy have been selected co-most valuable players of the North Valley League by the league’s basketball coaches.

Bankhead, a 6-foot-6 forward, is averaging 26.1 points and Wyatt, a 6-3 guard, is averaging 20.4.

League champion Taft landed three players on the first team: sophomore center Johnny Williams (6-7), senior guard Casey Sheahan (6-2) and senior forward Miguel Carrillo (6-1).

D.J. Jackson of Antelope Valley College has been named basketball player of the year in the Foothill Conference.

Jackson, a 6-8, 210-pound freshman forward from Montgomery, Ala., led Antelope Valley (19-12, 13-3 in conference play) to its third consecutive conference title and a berth in the Southern California regionals. Jackson averaged 30.1 points and 13.1 rebounds a game during the regular season.

Jackie Lott of Antelope Valley College has been selected as the Foothill Conference women’s basketball coach of the year.

Lott guided Antelope Valley (22-7, 11-1) to a share of the conference title with Chaffey.

Kevin Kloek, a Cal State Northridge pitcher, shared Collegiate Baseball magazine’s player of the week honors with Alabama’s Mick Kerns.

Kloek, a junior right-hander, had 23 strikeouts without a walk in complete-game victories over USC, 9-2, and San Jose State, 6-0. He allowed only eight hits.

Cal State Northridge middle blocker Ken Lynch was named Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. player of the week. The 6-5 junior from Crespi High made 33 kills for a .359 hitting percentage to help the sixth-ranked Matadors upset fourth-ranked UCLA. He also had 10 digs, three blocks and a service ace.

Chaminade High quarterback Travis Hall signed a national letter of intent with Cal State Northridge. Hall (6-3, 205) completed 87 of 177 passes for 1,097 yards and seven touchdowns last fall. He also played extensively in the secondary. At Northridge, he is projected at safety or outside linebacker.

Hall is the eighth high school player to sign with Northridge, which has also recruited eight junior college players and four transfers from Division I schools.

The Notre Dame High baseball team will conduct its annual preseason scrimmage and barbecue Saturday at the school baseball field. The event opens with a hit-a-thon at 10 a.m., followed by a baseball scrimmage at 11:30. The barbecue follows at 1:30 p.m.
