The Eagle Rock basketball program has enjoyed a season of unprecedented success.

The girl’s basketball team, under Coach Drew Lord, won its third consecutive Northeastern League championship.

The boy’s team, under Coach Bill Whiting, made it a sweep by winning the league championship for the first time since 1982-83.

“We’ve had good senior leadership,” Whiting said of the boy’s team. “And we’re lucky because our best players are our hardest workers.”

Senior Charles Garcia averages 17.5 points and 11 rebounds, and senior Larry Corbi averages 15.6 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles, who opened the City Section 3-A Division playoffs Wednesday against South Gate.

The La Canada girls’ soccer team swept local rival Crescenta Valley out of the Southern Section 3-A playoffs with a 3-2 victory.

La Canada (17-3-3) advanced to a second-round game against Pacifica. Crescenta Valley ended its season 18-5.

Kori Zimmerman, Maria Eland and Carlene Pengra scored first-half goals for La Canada.

The California Interscholastic Federation and Reebok will award $2,000 scholarships to the boy and girl who are selected scholar athlete of the year.

Applications for the award are available at high school counseling offices. Each school can nominate two athletes.

The application deadline is April 3, and judging will be completed May 11. The awards will be presented at the state track meet June 6 in Cerritos.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team finished the regular season with losses to Bakersfield and College of the Canyons, but the Vaqueros still earned a bid to the Southern California regional playoffs.

Glendale (13-15) will play Orange Empire Conference champion Rancho Santiago (21-9) Saturday at Rancho Santiago.

“They’re big in spots, but they do most of their scoring from the perimeter and that’s where our defensive strength is,” Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin said.

Glendale, hoping for an upset, might alter its offensive game plan for Rancho Santiago.

“When you do well in the regular season, you stay with what got you to the dance,” Beauchemin said. “But we haven’t been to the dance. Maybe we should change the record.”

The Glendale College men’s track team began its season with a Western State Conference tri-meet victory over Ventura and Valley.

Obed Aguirre won the 1,500 meters in 4 minutes 12.6 seconds. He also won the 5,000 meters in 16:31.5 to lead the Vaqueros.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College men’s basketball team concludes its season tonight with a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Claremont.

Occidental entered Monday’s game against Pomona-Pitzer with a five-game winning streak.

Last week, the Tigers defeated SCIAC-leader Redlands, 86-84; UC Santa Cruz, 87-85, and Caltech, 99-78, to improve to 12-12 overall and 5-7 in the SCIAC.

The Occidental women’s basketball team concludes its season Saturday against Cal Lutheran.

Tanisha White scored 19 points for Occidental in an 85-62 nonconference loss to UC San Diego last week. The Tigers rebounded with a 64-34 SCIAC victory that improved Occidental to 11-11 and 7-3 in conference.

Occidental, which won only three of its first 12 games, has won eight of its last 10.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Mike Harrison, Crescenta Valley--Harrison, a 6-foot-6 center, scored 16 points, had nine rebounds and blocked seven shots in the Falcons’ 70-54 victory over Agoura in the first round of the Southern Section 2-AA playoffs.

Harrison helped the Falcons avenge a defeat to Agoura earlier this season in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Dimitris Markopoulos, Occidental--Markopoulos, a senior guard who did not play last season, was a standout on offense and defense in the Tigers’ three victories last week.

Markopoulos scored nine points and helped keep Redlands 20 points under its average in an 86-84 Occidental victory. He scored 11 of his 16 points in the final three minutes of an 87-85 win over UC Santa Cruz, and scored 16 points in a 99-78 victory over Caltech.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Chris Anderson--Anderson, a former All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference center for the Occidental men’s basketball team, is playing professional basketball in Germany.

The 6-10 Anderson is playing for the ASC 74 Goettingen Club in German’s Division 3.

Last season Anderson played in Denmark for the Holbaek basketball club in Division 2.

MISCELLANY

Registration for L.A. Gear/American Roundball Corporation spring basketball leagues will be held March 8 and 15 at North Hollywood High. Boys and girls in grades 7-12 are eligible. All students who sign up will make a team and receive a jersey, shorts and shoes. Information: (818) 995-3761.
