The Lancers finished third in the Olympic League last season but made it to the Southern Section Division 1-A championship game, where they lost to Van Nuys Montclair Prep, 12-2. With 10 players returning from that team, Malmquist doesn’t see why Orange Lutheran couldn’t, or shouldn’t, challenge for at least the league title. The Lancers have excellent hitting and defense, and a first-rate pitcher in all-leaguer Hendren, who was 10-4 with a 2.69 earned-run average and 97 strikeouts last year. Courvoisier (.365 batting average, 38 runs batted in, 18 stolen bases) and Wichmann (.350) form what Malmquist said is one of the best double-play combinations in the county. Offensive standouts include all-leaguer Presley (.405 with 48 RBIs), Campbell (.450 with 26 stolen bases combined on the varsity and junior varsity), Huss (.300 with 17 stolen bases) and Hendren (.397). “We just put the ball in play somewhere,” said Malmquist, now in his 10th season at Orange Lutheran. “That’s the key. We want our players to be disciplined at the plate.”
