Acheson, an assistant with the Patriots the past two seasons, takes over a team that finished fourth in the five-team Academy League last year. He is counting on strong defense and timely hitting to keep Heritage Christian in games this season. “Because our pitching is questionable, basically we are going to play for one run at a time,” Acheson said. “We don’t have very big, strong hitters. It’ll be kind of a Billy Ball-type thing.” Drabeck at second base and Zubas at shortstop, when he is not pitching, anchor the infield. Acheson’s son, Steven, provides quickness in center field. “I think we’ll be fine defensively,” Acheson said. “We’ll hold our own.” Zubas probably will be the No. 2 starter behind Thomason. “I need a lefty badly,” Acheson said. “Marty Bosch probably will be our third pitcher.” How those pitchers respond will dictate much of the team’s fate. “If my pitchers can keep the ball in the park, I think we’ll be all right,” Acheson said.
