Rashaan Salaam, a running back for La Jolla Country Day, was one of seven San Diego Section football players placed on the South team for the North-South Shrine California All-Star Classic, it was announced Monday.
The game will give Salaam, one of the most prolific running backs in section history, a chance to answer critics who pointed out his numerous records came against 1-A opponents.
The South team will be coached by El Camino’s Herb Meyer. He will be assisted by Larry Walsh of Atascadero.
Other Section athletes selected: Torrey Pines’ tight end John Allred, Mira Mesa quarterback Chad Davis, Point Loma defensive tackle La’Roi Glover, Vista linebacker Chato Jackson, El Camino linebacker Abdul McCullough ad Lincoln defensive back Scott Hammond.
Player selections were based on returned ballots that were mailed to every high school and college coach in the state. Also factored in was how players figured to fit into projected game plans of the respective coaches.
The game will be played July 25 at a site to be determined.
In the weekly state basketball rankings as conducted by Cal-Hi Sports, the Torrey Pines’ boys (25-3) were ranked No. 2 in division II behind Danville San Ramon Valley (23-2). The Falcons also were ranked No. 6 overall in Southern California.
