SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Patrick Henry Scores Upset

For the second game in a row, underdog Patrick Henry pulled off a big upset by winning a shootout in the San Diego Section Division I boys’ soccer playoffs. The fifth-seeded Patriots (19-2-1) battled back from a two-goal deficit, forced overtime then beat defending champion and top-seeded San Diego, 3-2, in a five-round shootout in Wednesday’s quarterfinal game at Hilltop High.

Patrick Henry upset No. 4 San Dieguito, 3-2, in the quarterfinals after four shootout rounds. San Diego’s season ends at 20-1-1.
Patrick Henry, after falling behind, 2-0, within the first 13:30, outshot San Diego, 35-8, to send the game into sudden-death overtime. The two teams played through two scoreless 15-minute overtime periods, forcing the shootout. Patriot goalie Kyle Stephens blocked the Cavers’ first shootout attempt, then watched teammates Dustin Jenks, Bill Dakouris, Ross Murray and Peyton Leeke score on four consecutive attempts.
San Diego made its second, third and fourth attempts but Stephens deflected the Cavers’ fifth shot off the crossbar to give the Patriots the upset.
Peter Tomsovic, with an assist from Jenks, scored at the 38-minute mark and Leeke, assisted by Lee Martin, scored at 67 minutes to tie it. San Diego’s goals were scored by Juan Velazco.
