OUTLOOK

Loara advanced to the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons and was the only Empire League team to defeat league champion Katella, so Larson is feeling upbeat about her program. The Saxons have nine starters returning and have enough players clamoring to join the program that she has created a freshman-sophomore team for the first time. But it’s not only the quantity that has Larson excited, it’s the quality--seven varsity players are members of traveling softball teams. “In the past we were lucky if any player was interested enough or dedicated enough to improving her game to play outside ball,” Larson said. The Saxons are strong up the middle with Shirley in center field, Rowe at shortstop, Wedekind and Watson at catcher and Hyde, who had a 0.88 ERA in league play, at pitcher.
