Last season the Griffins’ expectations soared when they finished second in the prestigious Canyon tournament. But midway through the league season, their top pitcher, Dolan, was sidelined with an injured back. “That was the kind of season we had,” Shannon said. “A lot did not go our way.” Shannon thinks that will change this season and the Griffins will at least challenge for a playoff spot. All but two starters return from last year’s team. “They look like a well-rounded team this year, and we look to be among the top contenders in the league,” she said. Dolan, a first-team, all-league selection, recovered, pitched well for her summer-league team and likely will be one of the top pitchers in the league, looking to improve on her three no-hitters, 97 strikeouts and 0.90 earned-run average last season. Rehard will be a capable backup for Dolan. Renee Bergeron, a first-team, all-league selection last season, is a strong defensive shortstop, and Wilson, a first-team selection as a freshman, is an aggressive outfielder who can also pitch if necessary.
