OUTLOOK
There’s no Cheryl Longeway to deliver her blazing pitches for the Fighting Irish this season, since the all-county hurler (20-4, 0.23 earned-run average, 268 strikeouts) is now at Cal State Fullerton. But Hall says she’s got another stellar pitcher in right-hander Pitt. “She throws hard,” Hall said. “She’s one of the better ones (pitchers) in the county.” Longeway is the only starter not returning for Kennedy, which finished second behind Garden Grove in league play last season before losing to Katella, 1-0, in the first round of the Southern Section Division 5-A playoffs. Of the players coming back, McLeod had the best batting average (.393) in 1991. Center-fielder Jimenez batted .381 and left-fielder Hensel hit .317. Both are sure-handed outfielders who did not commit an error last season. Hall said that newcomer Gutjahr will battle for first base with veteran Gragnano. “(Gutjahr) is a strong girl,” Hall said.
