Another team not hurting for a frontline starting pitcher, the Mariners have one of the best in the county in Surface. The right-hander, who will play at Northwestern next season, pitched five no-hitters last year, two of them perfect games. Weil is happy to see her back. “She’s looking forward to the season. She’s been working hard,” said Weil, now in his third year at Pacifica. “With Susan (Denny), they make one of the top batteries in the county.” The Mariners reached the Southern Section Division 4-A semifinals two seasons ago, losing to Garden Grove, 1-0. Weil thinks the team’s attitude plummeted after that game and carried over to the 1991 season. “We had a lack of intensity after losing to Grove,” Weil said. “The freshmen we have this year are real matured kids and I think they’ll help the program tremendously with attitude and talent.” Two of the freshmen, Carlson and Rummel, will be counted to supply power at the plate. “They are big, strong kids who hit the heck out of the ball,” Weil said. That’s good news for the Mariners, who averaged only 0.96 runs last year. Mascarenas (.965 fielding average) provides a steady glove.
