OUTLOOK

The Eagles will have the luxury of attacking from both sides this year. Calvary Chapel has five players who bat left-handed and two southpaw pitchers, which Melendrez plans to exploit. “It’s nice to be able to give the other team a different look,” Melendrez said. “It’s a good situation for us.” The Eagles are led by Farris, last year’s league MVP and the team’s cleanup hitter. Farris, who bats left and throws right, again is expected to be Calvary Chapel’s top run producer. Mahlow, who was a first-team all-league choice last year and also bats left, leads off for the Eagles. “I think Amanda’s one of the fastest kids around,” Melendrez said. “She finds a way to get on base.” A third lefty is Schroy, also a first team all-leaguer. Schroy will share pitching duties with Younger, a right-hander who mixes good speed with control. “Our pitching is inexperienced, but there’s a lot of potential there,” Melendrez said. Hoffman, who missed last season because of injury, was an all-league catcher as a sophomore and returns to stabilize the battery.
