Champions reign again in the Glendale area this week after the success of the La Canada and Ribet Academy boys’ basketball teams in the Southern Section playoffs.

La Canada (26-2), under Coach Tom Hofman, won its first Southern Section title by defeating San Dimas, 62-53, for the 3-A Division championship at the Sports Arena on Saturday. The Spartans extended their win streak to 21 games and earned a berth in the Southern California regional of the state playoffs.

Ryan Asplund scored 16 points, Eric Sanchez had 15 and Jimmy Evans and Richard Mandeville each had 12 for La Canada against San Dimas (23-7).

“We played 28 games this season, and there wasn’t one letdown,” Hofman said. “Usually, you have a lull at some point. But this team never had one.”

La Canada (26-2) played La Jolla Tuesday in the first round of the state playoffs. Ribet Academy won its third consecutive Southern Section championship with a 50-47 overtime victory over Bel-Air Prep on Friday in the 5-A final at Daniel Murphy High. Orville Turner scored 26 points and had 13 rebounds for the Fighting Frogs (20-5).

Ribet, the defending state champion in Division 5, played Strathmore Tuesday in the first round of the state tournament.

The California Interscholastic Federation and Reebok will award $2,000 scholarships to the boy and girl who are selected scholar athletes of the year.

Applications for the award are available at high school counseling offices. Each school can nominate two athletes.

The application deadline is April 3, and judging will be completed May 11. The awards will be presented at the state track meet June 6 in Cerritos.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Glendale College track teams had disappointing showings last week in a Western State Conference quadrangular meet at Bakersfield College.

Bakersfield dominated the men’s meet with 103 1/2 points. Cuesta scored 27 1/2 points, College of the Canyons had 27 and Glendale had 22.

Oved Aguirre was Glendale’s only bright spot, winning the 5,000 meters in 15 minutes, 10.1 seconds.

The Glendale women’s team scored 28 points to finish third behind Bakersfield (63) and Cuesta (52). Canyons finished fourth with 21 points.

American Rivas of Glendale won the 3,000 meters in 11:29.8 and the 1,500 in 5:16.3.

COLLEGES

The streak is over.

The Occidental women’s track team lost a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet for the first time in 12 years when it was defeated by Pomona Pitzer, 71-64, on Saturday at Occidental.

Brittany Burch, an All-American heptathlete, led Pomona by winning the 100-meter hurdles, long jump and javelin.

Occidental’s Becky Kopchick won the 800 meters in 2:24.06 and the 3,000 in 10:20.15.

The Pomona men earned their first dual-meet victory since 1987 over Occidental, 98-65.

Pomona’s Nate Kirtman, the two-time defending Division III long-jump champion, won seven events, including the 100 meters, 200, 110 hurdles, long jump, triple jump, javelin and high jump. He also ran the anchor leg in the 4x100 relay.

Occidental forward Blair Slattery was selected first-team All-SCIAC by conference coaches after averaging 19.7 points and 11.5 rebounds.

Slattery, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, also was selected second-team All-West Region by the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches. Slattery helped Occidental finish 14-12 overall and 7-7 in the SCIAC. The Tigers concluded their season with a seven-game winning streak.

Patty Buffett of Occidental will compete in the NCAA Division III swimming championships March 20-22 at Buffalo, N.Y.

Buffett, a freshman, qualified in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard free and 100-yard backstroke.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Ryan Asplund, La Canada--Asplund, a senior, scored a team-high 16 points for the Spartans in their 62-53 victory over San Dimas in the Southern Section Division 3 basketball final.

Asplund made three of five three-point shots for La Canada, which entered the state playoffs with a 21-game win streak.

Gunnar Miller, Occidental--Miller, a freshman pole vaulter who graduated from Hoover High, set a personal record with a vault of 15-1 1/2 in Occidental’s SCIAC dual meet last week.

Miller’s previous personal best was 14-6.

MISCELLANY
