Savanna, which reached the second round of the playoffs last season after finishing second in league, lost all of its infield to graduation. First-year coach George, a varsity assistant last season, has a lot of spots to fill. Also gone is pitcher Leigh Sager, who set 12 school records and is now playing for Cypress College. The Rebels also lost their starting catcher to graduation. Two freshmen, Chrissy Vega and Miller, are expected to fill the gap with Vega at pitcher. “Our pitcher is pretty confident in herself, and she’s going to do fine,” George said. “She throws a lot of different pitches. She’s a smart pitcher and knows when to set batters up and throw a smart pitch.” Older sister Angie Vega is the top returner, having batted .417 last season. She’ll play center field. Vega also had a fielding average of .905, second only to Gallegly (.961). Gallegly, a second-team all-league selection last year, batted .345 and returns at first base. “We have a real fast team,” George said. “That, plus our hitting, are our strengths.” George says the team will likely struggle early in the season until everyone learns to play as a cohesive unit. George says Angie Vega, a first-team all-league selection last season, has the potential to be an all-Orange County player this season.
