HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : VanWagenen’s 2 Homers, Aghajanian’s Shutout Propel Crespi

Brodie VanWagenen swung the biggest bat as Crespi High battered host Cerritos, 8-0, Thursday in an El Segundo baseball tournament quarterfinal.

VanWagenen, a senior second baseman, hit two home runs and drove in seven runs. VanWagenen hit a two-run shot to left field in the fifth inning and a three-run shot to center in the sixth.

VanWagenen and teammate Joe Turner each had three of the Celts’ 13 hits. Casey Snow, Vic Seper and Javier Avila each had two hits.

Senior right-hander Phillip Aghajanian (2-0) yielded three hits and struck out two in six innings to earn the win.

In other baseball games:

Westlake 7, La Mirada 1--John Snyder allowed one run over six innings for host Westlake (2-1) in an El Segundo tournament game.

Snyder (2-0) allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked two. John Ybarra and David Hayes each had two hits and drove in two runs for Westlake.

Royal 7, Leuzinger 3--Despite allowing 10 hits, Paul Taylor pitched a complete game for Royal (2-1) and struck out five. Shortstop Dave Landaker homered for Royal.

Kennedy 16, Franklin 8--John Davis went four for five, scored three runs and drove in six to lead host Kennedy (3-0) in the San Fernando tournament. Jason Makohon had two singles, scored one run and had five runs batted in. Johnny Toven had two hits and two RBIs.

Cleveland 3, Grant 1--Julio Marcial had two singles and two RBIs and Rob Rundquist pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief to give host Cleveland (2-0-1) a win in the San Fernando tournament.

Rundquist, who gave up two hits, entered the game with two out and the bases loaded in the second inning but pitched out of the jam.

El Camino Real 9, Birmingham 4--Randy Wolf hit a two-run home run to cap a four-run third inning for host El Camino Real (2-1) in the San Fernando tournament. Wolf had three hits and three RBIs. Teammate Dan Cey was three for three with two RBIs, and Mike Smith had two doubles.

San Fernando 11, Thousand Oaks 9--Tony Cabrera had three hits, including a double, and picked up a save to lead San Fernando (3-0) in a San Fernando tournament game.

Ishmael Serrano and Scoody Woods each had two hits for the Tigers. Buzzy Ketchum and Jamal Nichols each tripled for Thousand Oaks.

Granada Hills 6, Poly 5--Heath McElwee scored from third on an error with two out in the ninth inning to give the Highlanders (3-0) a win in a San Fernando tournament game.

Buena 7, Marshall 1--Gary Paul had a two-run home run and Brandon Knight thew a four-hitter for Buena (3-0) in the Westside tournament game.

Village Christian 6, Ontario Christian 0--Mike Rieger pitched a two-hitter, striking out six and walking four, in a nonleague game. Jeff Deal and Anthony Orefice each doubled for Village Christian (3-0).

Buckley 4, St. Monica 3--Chris Irwin had three hits and picked up the victory in relief for Buckley (2-0) in a nonleague game.

SOFTBALL

Palmdale 2, San Marcos 1--Cheree Rogers’ seventh-inning home run decided the outcome of the nonleague game at Palmdale. Rogers, who also tripled in the fifth inning, pitched a six-hitter.

Quartz Hill 1, Royal 0--Sara Higginson had a run-scoring double in the second inning and Correna Berlinger threw a one-hitter to give Quartz Hill (3-0) a nonleague win at home.

Crescenta Valley 4, Burroughs 0--Cara Campbell had a two-run single and Kim Welsh hit a two-run home run for the host Falcons (2-0) in a nonleague game.

Hoover 2, El Camino Real 0--Nancy Evans (2-0) struck out nine in six innings and also singled twice in the second-round game of the Hart tournament. Shannon Feliz had a two-run double.

Calabasas 4, Highland 3--Kristi Thomsen hit a solo home run and Heather Siegel had a triple and a double for host Calabasas (2-1) in a nonleague game.
