Sport: Baseball

Position: Catcher

Class: Senior

He doesn’t play third base, but last week the left-handed hitting Corona del Mar catcher hit like his father, former California Angel Doug DeCinces. Tim went seven for nine with two homers and six runs batted in in three games to help the Sea Kings finish third in the Newport Elks Tournament. DeCinces also scored eight runs and reached base in 10 of 12 plate appearances. In Corona del Mar’s 11-8 loss at Mater Dei in the semifinals of the Newport Elks Tournament, DeCinces’ home run to right-center field impressed Monarch Coach Bob Ickes. “Coach Ickes told me that in 18 years, he had only seen six balls leave the park in right field at Mater Dei because of the severe crosswinds,” Corona del Mar Coach Scott Magers said. Tim’s other home run last week came in Saturday’s 7-6 victory over Foothill in the third-place game. He combined with Todd Kehrli, Theo Rokos and Mike Susson to hit four consecutive home runs, highlighting a five-run fifth inning.

Other top performers:

Charlie Davidson, the Saddleback sprinter who won boys’ athlete of the meet honors Saturday at the Irvine Invitational. Davidson won the 100 meters and 110-meter hurdles to help Saddleback win the team title with 89 points, 45 ahead of second-place Foothill.

Russell Gan, a setter who helped Newport Harbor win the Division I Orange County Volleyball Championships Saturday, and earned most valuable player honors for the tournament.
