NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Paralympics Competition Keeps San Dimas Man Busy

Dave Kiley of San Dimas will be a busy man the next few months.

This weekend, Kiley, 38, will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. with the Casa Colina Condors for the wheelchair basketball national championships. The Pomona-based Condors have won seven national titles in 12 years.

After the basketball competition, Kiley will depart for Albertville, France, where he will compete in four events of the Winter Paralympic Games.

In September, Kiley will be a member of the United States’ wheelchair basketball team that will compete in the Summer Paralympics at Barcelona, Spain.

“It’s been a busy winter for me,” said Kiley, who began skiing four years ago. “This is the culmination of a lot of hard work.

“The traveling involved with this next chapter is going to be very intense. I’ll be leaving pretty much from the gym (in Albuquerque) and flying back to L.A., from where I’ll be going to London and then on to Geneva. That’s going to be the intense part.”

Season finales: The high school basketball season finally ended, but not before several San Gabriel Valley-area teams participated in the state tournament.

The Glendora boys’ team won the Southern Section 2-AA Division championship by defeating Artesia, but the Tartans could not duplicate their effort in the state tournament. Artesia beat Glendora, 59-54, on Saturday in the Southern California regional final at the Sports Arena.

Artesia will meet Danville San Ramon for the Division II state championship Friday night in Sacramento.

Glendora finished the season 33-1.

The Rio Hondo Prep girls were eliminated in the Division V Southern California final by Christian of El Cajon, 57-49. Rio Hondo Prep finished 27-2.

The South Hills girls team lost to defending state champion Brea-Olinda, 74-25, in the semifinals of Division III regional. South Hills finished the season 25-4.

Season finale, cont: The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team made its earliest exit from the NCAA Division II playoffs since 1984, when the Broncos lost to UC Davis, 69-49, in the first round of the West regional at Davis, Calif.

Pomona, which had only eight players available for most of the season because of injuries, finished the game against Davis with only four players after four Broncos fouled out.

Mildred Conston scored 18 points and Carrie Strittenberg had 15 for Pomona before they fouled out. The loss ended Pomona’s 18-game winning streak. The Broncos, making their 11th consecutive playoff appearance, finished 23-6.

Aloha: The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team will be in Hawaii this weekend to participate in the Rainbow Classic tournament.

Keelin is batting .474 for the Broncos, who improved to 5-14 overall and 2-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. by winning two of three games from UC Riverside last week.

Moving Up: Nicole Hummel came closest to a victory during her brief stint on the professional tennis circuit, losing to Kristin Godridge, 6-4, 6-4, Saturday in a first-round match in the $2.8-million International Players Championships in Key Biscayne, Fla.

The San Marino High senior is ranked 794th in the world, Godridge 132nd. Hummel lost to Maureen Drake, 6-2, 7-5, in a first-round qualifying match in the Virginia Slims of Oklahoma City and 6-3, 6-1 to Alexia Dechaume in the Matrix Essentials Evert Cup last month.
